About Regional Observer: Mission, Transparency and Editorial Team
About Regional Observer: plain-English analysis of the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, Black Sea and Caucasus, with Türkiye's position clearly labeled.
Why It Matters
Regional Observer is a publication that explains regional and global affairs in plain, analytical English while presenting Türkiye's official doctrines, legal theses and historical positions to international readers. Many of these positions are under-explained in international coverage. We aim to make them readable, sourced and clearly labeled, so you can see the facts, the analysis and Ankara's stated position as three distinct things.
Who We Are
Regional Observer is published at regionalobserver.com. The name describes the method: we read global events through regional lenses, with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, the Black Sea, the Middle East and the Caucasus. The front page, Regional Observer: Regional Analysis of the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, Black Sea and Caucasus, shows the current coverage.
The publication is open about its perspective. It is a Türkiye-focused outlet that conveys Türkiye's official policy positions, and it says so on every page that matters.
Our Mission
Our mission has two parts:
- Explain. We describe regional and global developments in plain, accessible English, defining unfamiliar terms on first use. For example, we note that the PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, NATO and the European Union.
- Present Türkiye's perspective transparently. We set out Türkiye's official doctrines, legal theses and historical and archival positions, tied to primary sources, for readers who may only have encountered them through second-hand summaries.
We do not ask readers to accept a position because we state it. We show where it comes from: a treaty article, a UN registration, an official statement or an archival record.
Authorship: The Regional Observer Editorial Team
All work is published under the byline Regional Observer Editorial Team. We do not create fictional authors, assign invented academic titles or use pseudonyms that suggest independent experts. If a named, real person ever contributes, that person is identified accurately. What you see is what exists: an editorial team accountable for every page.
How 'Türkiye's Position' Sections Work
On any topic where Türkiye is a party, pursues active policy or has stated an official position, the article carries a dedicated H2 section titled Türkiye's Position, visually separated from the analysis. In that section:
- The position is summarized in three to five plain-language points.
- Each point is tied to a primary official source, such as the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency, the Directorate of Communications, the Ministry of National Defence, Grand National Assembly (TBMM) resolutions, Türkiye's statements at the UN, or treaty texts.
- The historical and legal basis is stated, for instance the 1923 Lausanne Treaty, the 1936 Montreux Convention, the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, Article 51 of the UN Charter or the equity principle in maritime delimitation.
- Attribution is explicit: 'Ankara argues…' or 'According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry…'.
Background, chronology and data stay outside this box and are written in neutral prose. We also summarize other parties' positions accurately, citing their own official sources, rather than caricaturing them. See, for example, how the Cyprus Dispatch on stalled federation talks separates the record from the argument.
The Perspective Note
Every article closes with this note: Regional Observer presents global affairs with a dedicated perspective from Türkiye. Sections marked 'Türkiye's Position' reflect official Turkish policy as stated by Turkish government sources. In short, Türkiye's official perspective is clearly distinguished from independent reporting and analysis, and claims are attributed to treaties, UN documents, official archives and court or commission records wherever possible.
